Peace Among the Thistles

While the miniature donkey who modeled for this painting lives in southern Arizona, I chose to portray a landscape closer to home: the Abiquiu Valley, New Mexico, with Georgia O'Keefe's beloved mountain Pedernal visible in the background. Burros and thistles are both introduced species, but they have both become synonymous with the arid American west.
