Turkey vultures are a familiar sight across much of North America. In my hometown of Cortez, CO, they congregate among the big shade trees along one of the main streets. It's a lovely sight when dozens of them float steadily earthward on a balmy summer evening, and I've always found the image beautiful and poignant. In many cultures, vultures are considered messengers from the afterlife and are associated with cleansing and renewal rather than with death. Edition of 15.
